The Amazing Sea Buckthorn Oil

October 18, 2012 6:14 pm

For those of you who haven’t picked it up yet, I am a ravenous consumer of information. I love to research and study new ideas, products, and opinions. Recently a friend brought onto my radar a supplement called Sea-Buckthorn and the more I studied it the more interested and excited I became. And now I thought I’d share with you what I’ve found!

What is Sea Buckthorn Oil?

Sea Buckthorn is a spiny shrub with tangerine colored berries native to Northern China and Siberia. For thousands of years Sea Buckthorn berries have been utilized as a dietary supplement and used medicinally for skin treatments in both Asia and Europe.

Sea Buckthorn is primarily made up of fat soluble vitamins A and E in addition to essential fatty acids (EFA), all of which have great antioxidant properties that protect our skin from free radicals, reduce cell damage, and increase cell regeneration. But one reasons I’m so excited about Sea Buckthorn oil is because it contains the rare Omega-7 fatty acid. This very powerful fatty acid promotes, from the inside-out, proper cellular function and repair that leads directly to great skin.

Sea Buckthorn Oil and Skin Care

Sea Buckthorn oil has multiple benefits in the area of restorative and anti-aging skin care. The natural antioxidants and essential fatty acids contained in Sea Buckthorn promote our skins natural restorative processes and help to reverse the effects of sun damage like wrinkles, age spots, and dryness. It is also instrumental in the production of collagen, an essential component of our skin mainly because as we age our bodies produce less and less collagen leading directly to wrinkles and much older looking skin. A great side note is that it is well tolerated by all skin types whether applied directly to the skin or taken orally.

Another huge benefit to using Sea Buckthorn is that it is a proven treatment for diminishing acne. The three main contributors to acne are weakness in the immune system, hormone imbalance, and chronic inflammation. Seabuckthorn contains potent, natural anti-inflammatory agents that work together to balance the body’s hormones and immune system. You can apply Seabuckthorn topically and it will act to strengthen the skin, reduce inflammation, and decrease scarring; all of which help to break the acne cycle and heal your skin from the inside and outside.

Weight Loss With Sea Buckthorn Oil

Weight gain is a common problem among people as they age and extra pounds can add stress and worry to anyone’s life. Television personality and Professor of Surgery at Columbia University, Dr. Mehmet Oz recently spoke highly of Sea Buckthorn as an effective weight loss aid emphasizing again the Omega-7 fats it contains which trigger the body to reduce the amount of fat it stores while curbing appetite.

An animal study published in the Journal of Science of Food and Agriculture analyzed two groups of mice that were fed a high-cholesterol diet loaded with fat and calories. The only difference was one group was given  sea-buckthorn oil and the other not.

At the end of the 4-week study the group of mice that had a daily dose of oil fared significantly better: they were half the weight of the control group and their total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly reduced.

This is a picture of two of the subjects…keep in mind the only variant was Sea Buckthorn oil! Everything else was the same!

So…Why Use Sea Buckthorn Oil?

So after all that, are you still on the fence? I can’t imagine you would be, but if so here’s what you can be expected if you decide to start using Sea Buckthorn:

If you’re looking to revitalize your health and improve your skin from the inside out which do you think would be better: the latest, hyped-up chemical on the market, or an all natural product with over 1,300 years of established success? I’ll always side with time-tested results, and personally I have incorporated three ounces of Sea Buckthorn oil twice daily into my diet. Sea Buckthorn supplements are sold in many natural-food stores. Look for cold-pressed extracts rather than those that have been solvent-extracted; these retain more of their nutrients. The use of sea buckthorn berry hasn’t been well studied in pregnancy; if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid Sea Buckthorn oil. And as always, you may want to consult your doctor before taking Sea Buckthorn.

And lastly, a nod to Dr Oz: here’s a video of him speaking about this amazing berry:
