The Amazing Effects of Green Tea

May 17, 2012 6:46 pm

Every day there are 73,000 free radical attacks on each skin cell in your body. These constant attacks damage the much needed and very important enzymes in your body, causing your skin to look sallow, dull, and much older than it needs to. To neutralize these free radical attacks, our skin needs antioxidants and a great place to find them is in green tea.

Green tea contains a potent plant nutrient known as green tea catechins (or GTC). Catechin is a type of polyphenol, which is a powerful antioxidant found not only in green tea, but also in garlic, fruits, potatoes, and some varieties of nuts. Polyphenols/antioxidants destroy free radicals, which damage the body at the cellular level leaving the body susceptible to cancer, heart disease, and many other degenerative diseases. There are many kinds of polyphenols, but GTC’s are the strongest of them all. When drank, green tea can do an enormous amount to repair and rebuild this free radical damage, but it must be drank, as the polyphenols it contains unfortunately oxidize and lose up to 75% of their potency when exposed to air for long periods of time. Drinking green tea is much more effective than either topical application or green tea supplementation.

Now comes the question of how much is recommended to drink? Drinking 2-3 cups per day is a good place to start. And, not to worry, green tea contains a lot less caffeine than coffee or black tea.

Another great benefit – green tea targets belly fat. Research at Tufts University indicates that the catechins in green tea activates fat-burning genes in the abdomen and speed weight loss by up to 77 percent.  And we all know, the more weight we lose, the better we feel and the better our skin looks.
