High Frequency: Rid Yourself of Acne and Fine Lines

March 21, 2013 7:25 pm

I’m a huge fan of good horror and science fiction films, especially the old, creepy ones with the giant buzzing equipment throwing electricity around. But did you know electricity can be used in a controlled manner to help get rid of fine lines and, even better, acne?

Many of my clients come into the studio looking for a safe, gentle, non-invasive means to eliminate adolescent and adult acne. Others have begun to notice a lack of firmness in their skin (especially under the eyes and jawline) and want to to firm things up a bit. Fantastically enough there’s one machine here at 360 Skin that does both.

High frequency skin care technology is widely recognized and used by skincare professionals throughout the world due to its effectiveness and overall efficiency. Through the application of oscillating electrical current, High Frequency has been show to help eliminate acne breakouts, soften fine lines, improve the appearance of dark, puffy eyes, and tone sagging skin. I thought we’d take this edition of the blog post and discuss exactly what High Frequency is and how it can help with a multitude of skincare issues.

What is High Frequency?

High frequency current was first developed in the late 1800′s by famed scientist Nikola Tesla. While it offers a number of functions, prior to the invention of ‘modern’ antibiotics, it was largely used for medical purposes such as an anti-bacterial treatment for strep throat and other infections.

By the 1970′s, European spas and salons had discovered the cosmetic and healing benefits of high frequency electrical stimulation and by 1980, the the technology became widely used in North American by skin care professionals. The safe, non-invasive aspect of high frequency was found to be very beneficial in the treatment of many skin conditions ranging from acne to wrinkles.

How It Works

High Frequency machines operate with special glass electrodes which come in many different shapes and sizes. When the electrodes are lightly touched to the surface of the skin, a high frequency electrical current passes through the neon or argon gas-filled glass electrode which then produces charged particles. When applied to the skin, the subject will experience a mild zapping or buzzing sensation.

High Frequency and Acne

The use of high frequency for acneic skin works on the bacteria inside the follicle that are causing the inflammation to begin with. High frequency promotes an antibacterial action that eliminates currently active acne lesions and can help stop pustules from forming in the first place. During the treatment the skin is loaded with oxygen which inhibits bacterial growth and effectively kills the multiplying bacteria inside the pustules. The inflammation and redness of the skin is quickly reduced and the client will look noticeably better with less inflammation. Within a few days the effects will be fully visible as the bacteria are eradicated and the skin begins to heal. Multiple treatments are usually needed to insure bacterial growth inside the follicle is contained and controlled.

High Frequency and Firmer Skin

In relation to firming and tightening the skin, the high frequency current works on “skin toning” rather than “muscle toning” by causing a circulation rush to the skin in addition to thermal tissue warming. This function causes a “natural” contraction of underlying blood vessels and small muscle groups. The dilation of these underlying vessels eliminates toxins while “feeding” the cells increased nutrients and hydration. The result is an improvement in blood circulation, deep cell renewal, and an increase in the production of collagen/elastin which acts to plump, soften, and smooth away wrinkles. Additionally, high frequency will maximize overall skin care product performance and absorption.

High frequency has been shown to produce an immediate and temporary lifting effect to most clients, however continued treatments by the skincare professionals at 360 Skin will help provide longer lasting results. The same way your fine lines and acne weren’t formed overnight, patience and diligence are the keys to getting your skin back in line and looking its best.

High frequency is a safe, natural approach to skin rejuvenation treatment, however the following precautions should always be taken: avoid using Retin-A, AlphaHydroxi- or Glycolic Acid products in conjunction with high frequency treatments. We cannot use high frequency during a pregnancy or if you have a pacemaker or a history of heart disease.
